The stellar journey of Alabama Shakes began as early as 2009, when lead singer and guitarist Brittany Howard, guitarist Heath Fogg, bassist Zac Cockrell, keyboard player Ben Tanner, and drummer Steve Johnson laid the foundation of what would become one of the strongest young bands of today.
The sound of Alabama Shakes can be described as a gritty mixture of roots rock, country, and Southern rock, with a pinch of all the quality stuff in between.
Much like any roots rock act, the band is heavily focused on live performance, jamming, improvisation, and most of all – quality live concerts. Alabama Shakes are packed with skilled musicians that know how to deliver the groove and keep things at a top notch level.
Formed as a group of high-school kids, the band grew for a few years since the formation and was ready to deliver the goods three years later, in 2012. “Boys & Girls” was officially released in April via Rough Trade Records, marking the band’s full-length debut and scoring quite a success across the States.
The effort landed at No. 6 on the US Billboard 200 chart and on No. 3 on the UK’s Official Albums Chart, which is a heck of a feat for a new band these days. The album was previously announced with a lead single “Hold On” in February, ultimately earning a spot among the best 50 albums of 2012 on Rolling Stone’s annual list of top efforts, as well as a Gold sales certificate both in the US and UK.
In the meantime, the band has added Ben Tanner to their roster as a touring member, handling piano, keyboards, percussion, and backing vocals.
Performances along such musical titans as Stevie Wonder, gigs on prestigious shows like Austin City Limits and Saturday Night Live, the doors just kept opening for the Alabama Shakes.
Following a period of constant touring, the time had come to take things to a new level with album No. 2. In April 2015, “Sound & Color” was released to massive worldwide success. With 96,000 units sold in the States within the first week, the album landed at No. 1 spot on the US Billboard 200 chart, earning the band their very first chart topper. Prior to release, the album was announced with “Don’t Wanna Fight” lead single in February.
Alabama Shakes are one of those bands that are keeping rock music and musicianship alive and well. They deliver an amazing amount of energy during live shows and prove that rock music is in its prime during youth after all. Roaring guitars, so much soul and groove, it is really no wonder that Jack White noticed this band and decided to include them with his label and introduce a series of singles for Third Man Records.
Get Alabama Shakes tickets today, see why rock music is alive, see why it should be kept alive, and support its longevity at the same time. The time has come to rock, groove and move, and they’ve only just begun. Keep your eyes peeled, the killer goods are yet to come!
